FLIGHT PATHS: The Dawn of the Drone Era
In a recent interview, Andre deSouza, a highly experienced professional in the Oil & Gas, Financial Services, and Hospitality industries, shared his insights on the increasingly pivotal role of drone technology across various sectors. As the Director of Operations, Commercialisation and Defence at the Harry Butler Institute – Murdoch University, deSouza brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective on the integration of drones into diverse fields.
deSouza’s initial training with another provider did not meet his expectations and he admits, felt very inadequate, making him question the safety of his future work as a drone pilot. This led him to pursue further training and engage with Global Drone Solutions (GDS), a decision he credits to the very positive reputation of the company.
The comprehensive training provided by GDS left him feeling confident in his ability to operate drones safely. deSouza also commended GDS for its community outreach, notably its connection with Drone Shop Perth, a firm with whom he has since conducted business.
In terms of the integration of drones into various industries, deSouza noted that we’re currently in the era of drones, as they’re being utilized in numerous sectors, including Resources, Environmental, Real Estate, and Entertainment, for applications such as remote inspections, surveillance and filming. He also highlighted the pairing of drones with other emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to increase their impact.
At the Harry Butler Institute, drone technology does play a role in operations. The Institute has conducted extensive drone testing and exploration, including the testing of new sensors and pairing them with AI. The Institute also aids organizations in learning how to use drones for their purposes through sharing of their case studies.
When talking about the challenges of adopting drone technology, deSouza said, “Despite us being in the age of technology, technology advancements are still viewed suspiciously by many. In my experience, it’s often due to a lack of understanding or misinformation.” He mentioned his favourite quote by Richard Bach: “What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls a butterfly”, which he appreciates simply because it “highlights the importance of a positive outlook”. deSouza explained that he applauds organizations like GDS for promoting drone use and helping to broaden the market for drones across various industries.
Andre deSouza’s insights highlight the growing importance of drone technology across industries, the value of comprehensive training, and a forward-thinking approach to safety and innovation.
