How to Get UAV Drone Training

When choosing a provider for training purposes you need to ensure they are CASA-certified and can offer you the necessary theory and practical training to obtain your RePL (Remote Pilot Licence) or equivalent, so you can operate drones commercially.

Getting Your Drone Pilots Licence

Obtaining your RePL is essential for flying drones commercially or earning income from drone operations. In order to get a drone pilot licence you need to complete a training course that includes both theoretical and practical assessments from a certified provider.

If you're using a smaller drone, under 2kg, you likely don't need an RePL but you will need to follow safety regulations and register your drone. An Operator Accreditation is an easier course and is usually enough for smaller drones.

If you want to operate your own drone business, you will need to also obtain an ReOC (Remote Operator Certificate). Holding a ReOC authorises your business to employ licensed pilots and manage compliant commercial operations under CASA regulations.

Before you undergo any training, you will need to get an ARN (Aviation Reference Number) and register your drone from CASA. Any drone weighing more than 250 grams, whether it is being flown for commercial or recreational use, must be registered with CASA to ensure you are operating legally.

When you have your ARN you can choose your training provider and complete your UAV drone pilot training according to CASA standards.

Once you have completed the training and assessments you are legally allowed to operate drones commercially, and you may consider undertaking additional training to further enhance your skills, knowledge and career.
